Shop Floors: Decide Before the Frame Goes Up
The most consequential slab on any property is the shop floor, because everything in it or under it is committed forever at the pour: vapor barrier, perimeter insulation if heat is ever coming, conduit stub-ups for a welder or a lift, drains and slope, and thickness matched to what will actually drive on it. Two more truths worth knowing up front. First, concrete cures chemically, and cold slows or ruins that process — which makes the pour window a real scheduling constraint in Montana and a reason summer calendars fill early. Second, the base under a slab matters more than the slab: a thick pour on poorly compacted ground fails before a modest one on a proper base.
